Socijalni slučaj je objektivni događaj (situacija)  koja nepovoljno utiče na pojedinca, grupu ili zajednicu tako što pogoršava uslove života nameće teškoće, smanjuje šanse za napredovanje u životu i čije posljedice se ne mogu prevazići bez organizovane društvene podrške i aktivnosti (Milosavljević, 2003). Socijalni slučaj se vezuje se za pojedinca ali nije pojedinac, već situacija! Više nego o stanju, radi se, dakle, o procesu koji ima početak te, zahvaljujući dijelom i intervenciji stručnjaka, može imati svoj tok i svoj kraj. Socijalni slučaj se javlja u određenoj frekvenciji, a mnoštvo socijalnih slučajeva predstavlja socijalni problem. Socijalni problem je društvena pojava koja privlači pažnju znatnog dijela datog društva koje je svjesno da takva pojava nepovoljno djeluje po društvo i njegove članove i da je zbog njega potrebna društvena akcija (Lakićević; 1980). Za razliku od socijalnog slučaja, koji se veže za pojedinca ili grupu, socijalni problem se vezuje se za društvo. Socijalni problemi se smatraju normalnom pojavom u društvu ali postoji uvjerenje da se neki mogu preduprijediti, neki suzbiti a kod nekih se mogu spriječiti nepovoljne posljedice. Primjere socijalnih problema predstavljaju eskalacije siromaštva, te nezaposlenosti. Socijalni rad je posebna profesionalna djelatnost u okviru društvene podjele rada, kojom se bave profesionalno obučeni i kvalifikovani kadrovi – socijalni radnici (Mimica; 2007). Ova struka nastala je upravo kao rezultat potrebe za bavljenjem rastućim i masovnim socijalnim problemima građanskog društva. Profesionalni soc. rad je star više od jednog vijeka.
